Shenandoah University Athletics Consulting (2016 - 2019) In the Fall of 2016, I began consulting work with 2 athletic teams at Shenandoah University (Men's Basketball, Men and Women's Cross Country). I offer testing services in anerobic and aerobic fitness (Wingate Cycling Test & VO2max test) as well as body composition analysis (InBody270). As part of my consulting, I provide feedback and analysis to coaches as well as to players which includes seminars on the data they recieve, how it relates and is used in their sport as well as healthy nutritional habits for student athletes. Consulting with athletics has provided an opportunity for my students to be involved in more complex data collection and analysis. My hope is to expand this consulting work to all of the athletic team as Shenandoah University in the near future. |
Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum - Science Night (2016 - 2019) The Exercise Science Department at Shenandoah University volunteers at the Shenandoah Valley Children's Discovery Museum on Science Night. For this event, as a department, we set up exercise science stations for children ranging from toddlers to teenagers to assess their (1) grip strength, (2) aerobic capacity, (3) vertical jump height, and (4) flexibility. This is a fun night for the faculty as well as providing an opportunity for some of our students to join us and work with children through science education. |
Sports Science Night (2015 - 2016) As outreach through the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), I was the guest speaker on sports science night for the elementary and middle school students on the Cutaway boys and girls cycling teams based out of Charlottesville, VA. For sports science night I covered the basic physiology of the human body and how we can train our body to perform our best during cycling events. I also discussed proper nutrition and hydration for on and off the bicycle. Finally, we ended the night with a lab activity to examine muscle activation. |
Physiology PhUn Week (2011- present)
Through the support of the American Physiological Society, Physiology Understanding (PhUn) Week has been established to enhance student interest in physiology as a possible career as well as increase student awareness of physiology in their lives. As a graduate student at Penn State, we hosted PhUn Week in a science class in the State College Area School District. In 2011 & 2012 I was a participating graduate student and from 2013 through 2014 I was charge in organizing and running the PhUn week lesson. We change the lesson each year to fit the age and experience level of the class that we are going to be working with. Past topics have included: Respiratory Physiology (2011), Cardiac Physiology (2012), Muscle Physiology (2013) and Environmental Physiology- Dive Reflex (2014). . In the Spring of 2016, I will be hosting PhUn week at Sherando Area High School in Stephens City, VA. I will be implement a PhUn week activity about the interaction of muscles and the nervous system and also provide careers in the sciences advice to future high school graduates. |
Blood Pressure Clinics (2011- 2015) Our laboratory group at Penn State supported community health through participation in health fairs and other community events to provide blood pressure screenings and research information to the community. Each year we participate in 2-4 events. Come see the Thermophysiology and Microvascular function lab at the next health fair in State College, PA or at People's Choice in Boalsburg, PA! |
